Building 4 Probation Fire

April 17, 2010 a fire began in a ventilation fan, the alarm was received by Rendin Alarm and the Darby Township Fire Company No. 4 was dispatched. Darby Township police arrived on location and reported a working structure fire. The response was up graded to include Folcroft Fire Company, Glenolden Fire Company, Briarcliff and Goodwill Fire Companies. Sharon Hill Fire Company was called for RIT. All of the companies did an excellent job confining the fire to the area of origin.

Board of Fire and Life Safety members, Training Center Staff and Community Service Supervisors also responded. Before the fire was completely extinguished Delaware County Restoration (DCR) crews were on site to secure the building. The following day representatives from Travlers Insurance and Darby Township Fire Marshalls were on scene evaluating the damage and completing the investigation. As soon as the building was released DCR began the process of cleaning the building and its contents. Community Service Crews relocated both the Adult and Juvenile Probation offices to the second floor of Building 1. Monday morning the Probation Staff was back to work and County Telecommunications and Data Processing technicians were busy establishing phone and internet service.

Due to the extensive damage to the Adult Probation offices it was decided to completely demolish 25 percent of the building and replace the entire roof and windows. Community Service assisted with the construction and some of the logistics. The HVAC systems and building exterior were upgraded. The cleaning of the building, contents, equipment and files lasted through the fall. The reconstruction was completed by late 2010.
